Report: Audi settles Chrysler Eminem ad infringement argument [w/video]
Audi and Chrysler looked ready to tussle over the German automaker's European commercial for the 2012 Audi A6 Avant. The commercial spot in question had many accusing it of being a bit too close to the Chrysler "Imported from Detroit" campaign that kicked off with Eminem selling the world on Detroit and the automaker's new 200 sedan. What could've been a negative battle has, in fact, become quite a positive for the city of Detroit.
The two automakers won't reveal specific terms of their settlement, but both state that the end result was reached amicably. As a result of their agreement, Audi is going to spend some cash on projects that work directly towards the revitalization of the Motor City.

Bow-Tie brand fans are chomping at the bit to get more information on the upcoming Chevrolet Camaro ZL1. General Motors decided to show off its latest high-performance coupe at the Camaro Homecoming event in Oshawa, Ontario. Chief Engineer Al Oppenheiser brought the car to the crowd, and then spent a few moments talking about the Zed ZL1 on camera.
For those unaware, the 2012 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 gets a host of upgrades over the rest of its siblings. On the outside, improved aerodynamics are in full effect from nose to tail. Inside, Chevrolet adds suede to the seats, steering wheel and shift lever. But the real heart of the ZL1 lies under the hood, and it seems we'll have to wait for official word to get the full skinny on the power output of the supercharged 6.2-liter V8 engine. Rumor has it that the Camaro ZL1 could be pumping out over 570 horsepower, but for now, all GM's saying is "at least 550."
As soon as we get the official figures from GM, we'll bring them to you. Their next vehicle of choice is the previous generation Jaguar XJ (X350) and includes updates made to both the exterior and the interior. Despite the "Black Bison" designation, the car is painted in a very cool blue.The exterior modifications are mostly the same old story associated with the Black Bison package. The Jaguar sees a number of new spoilers, including a new front bumper spoiler, roof spoiler, rear bumper spoiler, and boot lid spoiler. Side skirts, fender panels, and mirror covers with LED indicators are also added to the mix. The final touch can be found in the new set of 21" Renovatio R12 wheels, wrapped in 255/30R21 tires at the front and 295/25R21 tires at the rear.As with Wald International’s previously tuned models, the Jaguar XJ X350 gets a new DTM TW240 sports muffler to fine tune its sporty sound. The interior receives the usual leather seats, aluminum insertions, and the obligatory Wald International logo.The Black Bison package by Wald International is a rather cool tuning package, but we think they may be overdoing it just a bit. Report: Deportations due to drunk driving and traffic violations escalate dramatically

Anything to do with making or selling drugs is the number one way to get kicked out of the country, with 45,003 cases in the last fiscal year alone. That's up nearly one third from 2008, but drug offenses may not be number one for long thanks to a surge in drunken driving-related deportations.
According to the Associated Press, drunk driving-related deportations have nearly tripled from 10,851 cases in 2008 to 28,635 in the fiscal year ending September, 2010. Another 13,028 illegal aliens were deported for other serious traffic violations - three times the 4,527 offenders deported in 2008. The spike in drunken driving deportations is a part of a larger influx of illegals being deported for various reasons. In total, 393,000 non-U.S. citizens were shown the door, with half of those deported for criminal offenses.
The message here? After seeing the first concept version at the 2011 Shanghai Motor Show, now we can see the M5 in all its glory. And we sure like what we are seeing.The M5 name was used for the first time back in 1984, but since then, the car has evolved into an impressive sedan that combines track potential with the comprehensive practicality of a luxurious business sedan. The new generation brings a high-revving 4.4-liter V8 engine with an M TwinPower Turbo package that delivers an impressive 560 hp at 6,000 ? 7,000 rpm and a peak torque of 502 lb-ft from 1,500 rpm. The model will sprint from 0 to 60 mph in 4.4 seconds and, when the speed limiter is removed, is capable of hitting an impressive top speed of 190 mph. Scion is urging its dealers to ratchet up a new online buying system, according to Automotive News. The program borrows elements from the Amazon retail experience to allow car buyers to configure their vehicle as they see fit, find it at local dealership, secure financing and make the buy at a no-haggle price. Scion even wants the cars to be able to be delivered to the consumer's home, though that doesn't mean that physical dealerships are going anywhere any time soon. The report says that Scion won't force its dealers to operate exclusively online. Right now, the projects is merely in its concept phase.
According to Jack Hollis, Scion vice president, the idea sprung from the fact that consumers already shop and purchase everything from homes to boats online. The VP says that cars are simply the next logical step, especially given the brand's "Gen Y" demographic. That's despite the fact that most studies indicate that the large majority of car shoppers aren't into electronically interacting with dealers. Renault's handling of its Gordini revival has been disappointing. After starting off with Gordini appearance packages on the Renaultsport Clio and Twingo performance cars, Renault has elected to just dilute the Gordini moniker by applying it to the base Twingo and Wind Roadster, budget vehicles with no more sporting pretension than the stripes slapped on 'em. Now the base Clio is getting an all-show, no-go Gordini package as well.
It replaces the GT model and includes offset racing stripes, contrasting white trim, 16-inch wheels, Gordini-specific interior accents, and the requisite special badges. Engine choices for the three- or five-door hatchback are a 128-horsepower gasoline-burning four or a 105-hp diesel.
It's a far cry from the Gordini models of yore, or from the Clio RS Gordini that at least does the name some justice. '38 Bugatti Type 57 Stelvio Cabriolet hitting the auction block in Monterey

In the 1930s, the Bugatti Type 57 was, apart from its grand prix racers, the only vehicle offered by Molsheim. It gave rise to several body types, the most famous of which was the iconic Atlantic, but those represented only a handful of the 710 Type 57s that were built over its seven years of production.
Relying primarily on third-party coachbuilders, most of Type 57s were bodied as coupes, a handful as sedans, but a few were fitted with open-top coachwork. RM Auctions is offering one such Grand Raid Roadster at Pebble Beach this year, and has now released details of a second convertible 57 set to join it on the auction block.
This Stelvio Cabriolet with coachwork by Gangloff of Colmar was believed to have been commissioned by the Pernod family (of aperitif distillation fame), and has a fully documented history from its 74 years of ownership since. Well cared for and properly maintained, this Stelvio has its original 3.2-liter inline-eight and four-speed gearbox and is expected to fetch between $700,000 and $800,000. This year’s contest was held in order to design the Enzo of the future and brought together 50 schools and universities (totaling to 400 participants) around the world with many outstanding designs from talented artists. Surrounded by the utmost in competition, the Ferrari Eternita - a concept car designed by Hongik University in Seoul - took home the gold. The second and third places went to design studies from IED of Turin and the Royal College of Art in London.The Eternita impressed in terms of design, technology, and materials used. The designer developed a 1:4 scale model and paid lots of attention to reducing consumption with alternative propulsion systems. The Eternita’s power, in theory, will come from a hydrogen-hybrid drivetrain system with absolutely zero emissions. It sits mere millimeters off the ground and is designed so that the wheels mold into the body to reduce drag.The model presented at the event had to measure between 420 and 470 cm and have a width of no more than 200 cm. The specifications were important to adhere to because the winning design would be the inspiration behind Ferrari’s next hypercar. Ferrari isn’t all talk and no walk either. Ferrari Millechili won the contest back in 2005 and his vehicle was used as a design inspiration for many of Ferrari’s models. This year’s winners - Kim Cheon Ju, Ahn Dre, and Lee Sahngseok from Hongik University in Seoul, South Korea - are off to their three-month internship at Ferrari where they will shaprne their skills in the automotive industry. Jaguar put Jay Leno behind the wheel of the company's newest heathen - the XKR-S - for a handful of quick laps around the fabled Nurburgring, and Leno, thankfully, brought along a production staff to record the occasion.
The comedian was able to squeeze in a few lead-follow laps with Sascha Bert on point and eventually worked his speed up to a best time of 8:41. Not too shabby for a guy who's used to putting along under steam power. It's clear from the clip that Leno holds the Nurburgring to be sacred ground.
Leno doesn't spend too much time pontificating on the merits of the XKR-S. While we're treated to plenty of great shots of the car dancing around the track and the sound of its vicious dual-exhaust, the clip is absent any real driving impressions. If you had asked us just a few days ago if Giorgetto Giugiaro was behind the design of any production Lamborghini, we probably would have answered, Sure, he must have...right? Wrong. Because none of Lamborghini's road cars ever bore the famed designer's lines.
Bertone styled a few, but those only came years after Giugiaro left for Ghia and then went independent with ItalDesign. Over the course of his later career, he did a couple of design studies for the Raging Bull marque - like the Marco Polo of 1982 and the 1995 Cala concept. But though the latter, it could be claimed, eventually lead to the Gallardo (with a very different design), neither of these ever reached production. But this one almost did. Or at least maybe it should have.
Back in the early 1960s, Lamborghini was still making tractors. But word on the street was that old Ferruccio was bent on showing up Enzo Ferrari with a sportscar of his own. So a number of design houses started submitting proposals, unsolicited. Pininfarina, Ghia, Vignale and Michelotti were among those who vied for the contract, but Carrozzeria Touring eventually won out with the 350 GT, based on the work of former Bertone stylist Franco Scaglione.
Now, some fifty years later, an original design submitted by a young Giorgetto Giugiaro, still working at Bertone, has surfaced. And not just in renderings, either. The designer's son Fabrizio digitized his father's sketches, milled them into a model, painted it yellow, detailed the body and put it on a set of period-correct Borrani wires.
The design, as you can plainly see, was way ahead of its time. If you're thinking it reminds you of the Ferrari P3 or 250 LM, or like one of the Alfa Romeo BAT designs, think again, because none of those - nor anything like it - came along until years later. The result was presented to Giorgetto as a 70th birthday present, and is now prominently displayed at the company's design headquarters in Moncalieri, just nine miles south of Turin. Saab unearths Subaru Tribeca-based 9-6 prototype from the archives

Go back a few years ago to when Saab and Subaru were the quirky stepchildren in the General Motors family. That was before GM sold its stake in both, and when the beancounters in Detroit wanted to try something different. They took a Subaru Impreza wagon/hatchback, gave it some new bodywork and presto! the Saab 9-2x was born.
That wasn't the only tie-in between the two that was mooted, however. A second Saabaru was under consideration, based on the maligned Subaru Tribeca. The planned vehicle was scrapped before it had the chance to live, but following much demand from the Trollhättan faithful, Saab has taken the resulting 9-6 prototype out of hiding, put it on display at its own museum and published these photos through its Inside Saab blog for all to see. As you can see, the prototype (like the 9-2x) received an extensively reworked nose in line with the Saab look, but the interior would've been largely carried over had it reached production.
The emergence of the 9-6 prototype has some interesting timing, as Saab itself recently confirmed plans for an expanded lineup that includes a 9-6x - a model that we don't see sharing anything with the castoff crossover seen here. Land Rover is no stranger to the topless utility vehicles. In fact, it was one of the originators, and still offers the Defender as an open-air prospect. But that's a hard-core off-roader. The Evoque, in this and many other ways, charts new territory for the brand.
Rumor has it that the British purveyor of sport-utes is planning a convertible version of the Evoque that will more closely mirror the Nissan Murano CrossCabriolet and the rumored upcoming Audi Q5 cabrio. The drop-top version would in all likelihood be based on the three-door model as opposed to the five (like the Jeep Wrangler Unlimited), but aside from the roof configuration, it would likely mirror the hardtop model in every other way.
Could this be the Victoria Beckham special edition that's been touted? That would certainly kill any lingering prospect of men buying the convertible crossover. One way or another, we'll have to wait and see, and for that matter if the rumors will come to fruition at all. Chrysler has had its fair share of troubles with transport companies of late, but a reported plan to switch to non-union delivery could make for even more labor headaches down the road. Bloomberg reports that United Auto Workers boss Bob King will stand behind the Teamsters in the event Chrysler attempts to eliminate one of the country's longest-standing unions from its car delivery business. King spoke to the International Brotherhood of Teamsters at their Las Vegas convention last month, telling the crowd that Chrysler was planning to buy $5 million worth of transport trucks to give to a non-union company. King then went on to assure the Teamsters that the UAW was behind them, adding "We're going to fight together to make that 100 percent union, 100 percent Teamster."
While automakers rarely (if ever) look for union troubles, this potential rift could have especially bad timing. Chrysler and other domestic automakers enter talks with the UAW on a new labor contract later this month. Curse you, Sony Ericsson. Because of Asphalt 6: Adrenaline on the new Sony XPERIA Play, my productivity is down. Considerably. In the last two weeks, I've managed to start out with a Mustang GT and race my way to more than $4.2 million in cash reserves and a garage filled with a tricked-out Porsche 911, a couple Ferraris, a Lamborghini Estoque (one of my favorites for drifting) and the workmanlike Nissan GT-R, to name a few. As you probably suspect, none of it is real, not even the crazy Ducati motorcycle.
This is what happens when you play a good driving game, and I have towering pillars of unfinished assignments surrounding me in the real world to prove it. I don't own a console, and I don't have any plans to change that. Instead, this test-drive of the new XPERIA Play smartphone proves that a home-based gaming system is so 1988. Residents of the metropolitan Los Angeles area have been bracing for what's been dubbed Carmageddon. No, not the video game from the late '90s, but the scheduled closure of Interstate 405 over the course of this weekend.
The temporary shutdown of the hugely busy 10-mile stretch of highway is being effected so that it can be widened to ease traffic congestion, including the demolition and reconstruction of the Mulholland Bridge and the addition of a carpool lane.
Such a big move obviously needs to be brought to public attention, and to that end, Caltrans - the California Department of Transportation - brought in no less suitable a celebrity than Erik Estrada, best known for his role as California Highway Patrol officer Frank Poncharello on the TV show CHiPs. One word: plastics. That's where the future lies for automotive glazing. Like the line from The Graduate, there's a great future in plastics as a replacement for glass, especially as pressure ratchets up on fuel economy standards.
Hyundai and GE Plastics demonstrated the new automotive possibilities for plastics back in 2007 with the Hyundai QarmaQ, and emerging markets are key to the continued rise of polycarbonates. If a Chinese or Indian automaker buys into plastic instead of glass on a large scale, it might spur the rest of the auto industry to make the switch, Venkatakrish Umamaheswaran, director of automotive products and marketing for Sabic Innovative Plastics, tells Ward's Automotive.
Sabic is short for Saudi Basic Industries Corporation, which bought up GE Plastics. GE Plastics and Bayer MaterialScience had previously formed Exatec, a subsidiary to develop polycarbonates for automotive use. Polycarbonate glazing is lighter, which saves fuel right off the bat. Heating and cooling loads can also be reduced by applying UV-blockers to the plastic, which reportedly saves as much fuel as the material's lighter weight. The biggest barrier? Cost.
Sabic hopes that it can deliver increased value to manufacturers to make its glass-replacement technology more attractive. One of the biggest advantages of polycarbonate windows is that they're injection molded, making possible all sorts of shapes that are not feasible in glass. To deliver more bang for the buck, a supplier could provide a manufacturer with an assembled module that includes not only the window, but also trim, lighting, handles and even badging.
It's not here yet, though. Umamaheswaran admits that while Sabic has been getting larger projects, no high-volume operations are underway. Apparently, now is not a good time to be a brunette woman in your mid-20s. Why, you ask? It turns out you might be mistaken for Casey Anthony. And there might be lunatics out there doing their best to kill you.
Sound far-fetched? It's already happened. A woman named Sammay Blackwell of Chouteau, Oklahoma, was just finishing her nightly shift at a convenience store when she first met Shireen Nalley. A half-hour later when her shift ended at 10:30, Blackwell left in her Nissan pickup.
Unfortunately for Blackwell, Nalley had been waiting for her to leave, and she followed her out of the parking lot. A short time alter, Nalley rammed Blackwell's truck with her Chrysler minivan, and later collided with it again, causing Blackwell's truck to flip several times, landing on the driver's side.
Fortunately, Blackwell escaped without serious injury, and Nalley was later apprehended by the police. The reason she gave for trying to kill Blackwell? According to the attacker, she looked like Casey Anthony and she was "trying to save the children."
Salley is currently being held in jail, and police say there was evidence she was under the influence of drugs when they took her in. As a final indignity, Blackwell says that Nalley's insurance company is claiming it's not liable for damages if its client caused the accident on purpose.
Although Blackwell says she doesn't really look like Casey Anthony in any meaningful way, there is one coincidence: Blackwell has a young daughter named Caylee. Infiniti is getting ready to unveil its latest crossover at Pebble Beach in August, and has just released a second teaser shot to give us a glimpse of what to expect.
The JX will join the svelte EX and FX models in Infiniti's crossover range, but offer seven seats in a larger package.
