Report: Five Saudi women in custody for breaking driving ban

The Saudi authorities have stepped in to temper the momentum of Saudi Women for Driving. It is against religious law for women to drive in the Arabian country, a fact of life that Saudi women have now decided to fight. The campaign began earlier this year, headed by Manal al-Sharif, with a video she produced and her taking to the streets behind the wheel of a car, then with a plea to Subaru to stop selling cars in The Kingdom. In early June, 40 Saudi women drove en masse, in an escalation of their efforts, and since then scores more have driven through the capital and other cities.
The authorities didn't respond to those provocations, but they have to this latest one: five women were arrested while driving in the coastal city of Jiddah. Typically when the Pentagon puts out a tender for a new contract, it goes to to established defense contractors. Not so with the new XC2V FlypMode combat vehicle. This time, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) crowd-sourced the project, meaning that it opened up the contract to the general public to design.
The result is the vehicle you see here. Designed by the same Local Motors behind the Rally Fighter, the XC2V - shorthand for Experimental Crowd-derived Combat-support Vehicle - is, for the time being at least, a "proof of principle project," so we're not likely to see it go into production any time soon.
Whatever becomes of this impressively capable-looking vehicle, that Local Motors managed to put the whole thing together in just 14 weeks could be the most impressive part of all. Especially considering it would probably take us longer to build a kit car, and those have all the components and instructions ready to go. He would cut and trim down his hair by himself for hours in the bathroom and every time he came out of it, he had a crazy looking hair do and somehow every one liked them. I called the 50/50 hair do a style that had half of the head trimmed really short, and the other half trimmed down not so short. But the trimming had to be done in such a manner that the middle had to be longer than the rest, really complicated do if you ask me. My brother said he would like to copy German soccer team player, Bastian Schweinsteiger, but he's never actually got to copy it as good.But the coolness of a hair style really depends on the image you want to express. For example, a completely shaved head doesn't suit most people, or at least it certainly didn?t work for my brother. I'd say that the classical cool hair cuts for men are spiky hair, long hair and small Mohawks.But there are cool styles for different kind of men. For teenagers the above mentioned is perfectly good, but for guys a little bit older there are different styles. A guy that always seems to have a cool hair do is David Beckham, so I would recommend you to keep an eye out for him because he always seems to have that good looking hair we women love so much! Another famous personality that has always had a great hair cut, one of my favorites, is James Bond. No matter which actor represents him, James Bond will always have a great looking hair style.But no matter who, or which style you choose to have, a cool hair cut style can only look cool if it?s the right one for you. Behold the Glorystache, a giant creeper mustache soaked in America and trimmed in red fringe. It almost brings tears to our eyes.
The Glorystache's creators are more than a little tongue-in-cheek about their invention. Carstache, the Glorystache's San Francisco-based inventor, proudly says that the patriotic automotive facial hair has been inducted into the Absurd Automotive Accessory Hall of fame alongside classics like fake bullet holes and spinner rims.
The company's site even features an image of honest Abe Lincoln brandishing a Glorystache in one hand and an AR-15 in the other while riding a Grizzly Bear. We're certain the image isn't altered in any way. Fiat is working to sell more and more Chrysler models abroad, and the effort may already be pushing some of the automaker's manufacturing facilities to capacity. That appears to be true in the case of the Jeep Wrangler. According to The Toledo Blade, global demand for the off-road heathen is growing at a substantial pace, especially in Europe. As a result, total demand for the venerable SUV may easily overtake the capacity of its manufacturing complex in Toledo, Ohio. So far this year, Wrangler sales are up 13 percent in the U.S. alone, and with Jeep refranchising completed in Europe, Wrangler sales could increase even further abroad.
The globalization of Jeep products may lead to new models arriving here in the States, too. According to Michael Manley, president of the Jeep brand, Europe's unique emissions standards may make a viable case for once again introducing a diesel-powered Jeep on American soil. We like the sound of that.
So what will Chrysler do to keep up the Wrangler pace? Emo, is a term which is given to the subculture of hardcore punk and pop, which originated from the Washington DC area, but which later spread like wildfire to the rest of the US and also to other parts of the world. Car versus motorcycle is a never-ending debate, which can leave both sides of the room shouting and pointing (middle) fingers. Hell for Leather certainly sits on one side of the debate, but the crew also knows a thing or two about four-wheeled modes of transportation. Aprilia came to the HFL team to help produce a video showing what the new 2011 RSV4 Factory APRC SE can do against an automobile on a track.
Monticello's Mushroom track would be the place for the showdown, and the opponent is none other than a 2010 Nissan GT-R. Since these are two-wheel-loving folks, you can excuse them for stating that the 2010 GT-R produces 530 horsepower. It doesn't. The 2012 version certainly does, but the 2010 car "gets by" with 485. Still, the coupe is a track assassin, and a worthy opponent to the Aprilia.

Race of Champions forced to change venue

Over the course of its three decades of history, the Race of Champions has been held in various locations around the world. Following over a decade in the Canary Islands, the annual event was held for three years at the Stade de France, then two years at London's Wembley Stadium before moving to Beijing and on to Düsseldorf, Germany, last year.
This year's race was scheduled to take place at the Commerzbank-Arena in Frankfurt, but a change in the venue's soccer calendar has forced the race to change locations. The team that plays its home games at the stadium was relegated to the Bundesliga (union football league) second division, resulting in a scheduling conflict for both the race's primary and back-up dates.
Event organizers have yet to announce a new location, however they've indicated that the race will still take place somewhere in Germany, whose four-time Nations' Cup defending champions Michael Schumacher and Sebastian Vettel - F1 champs both - are both confirmed to follow the race wherever it goes. The American rapper recently purchased yet another vehicle to add to his collection and, although his new Bugatti Veyron isn’t as expensive as the Exelero, it’s equally as impressive.The rapper seems to have a thing for the color red too, as his $2 million fire flame red Veyron matches his red helicopter. According to Birdman "red is a fly color. It’s hot; represents heat. It’s the flyest color out there and it just blinds me."Hopefully the color won’t blind him too much considering he’ll now be sitting in a 1001 HP quad-turbocharged W16 supercar. The funny part about that is the rapper insists he is not one of those guys that likes speed: "I’ve gone on the interstate and busted, maybe, 160 [mph] going to the Heat game. What We Like: There is a swagger in the ads, and a tone and creative quality that hearkens back to when Lexus was launching as a new luxury brand in 1989 and 90. Call us car geeks, but we like the stories of how Lexus had to invent new processes, like a 3D loom to weave carbon fiber that is strong enough for its intended purpose. Innovating plastic that can be recycled infinitely sounds pretty cool, too, though we would discourage the company from using the stuff over and over again in its interiors, some of which lately seem to look like they were designed at the Igloo Cooler company. The close of one ad just released, titled "A New Era of Lexus Innovation," finishes on the track, and gives the brand a youthful energy - not unimportant since the vast majority of Lexus buyers lately also reap AARP discounts. In "Wall," a Lexus LS crashes a wall of beakers and vials each holding a different "alternative" fuel, such as bio-diesel, algae, liquid hydrogen, and so on. Lexus makes the point that its Hybrid Drive technology will optimize any fuel system on the planet, and that its technology is "future-proof." That's swagger.
What We Don't Like: Lexus has a way of making its ads sound like the brand is the last word in innovation. We guess that's what they were shooting for. It is, after all, advertising. But it's hard not to react with a bit of a jaundiced eye when we stop to consider just how pointless the hybrid system actually is in big cars like the Lexus LS. The fuel economy gain is negligible, and at a lot of extra cost. Seriously, $112,250 for the LS600h, about $45K more than an LS460? Want to impress us? Start mating your bigger vehicles to a diesel engine, which would be far more appropriate to the vehicles than hybrids. Also, you could work on the plastics aesthetics on the lower-priced Lexus models.
Strategy: Lexus has a well-known age problem. The age of its buyers has crept consistently over 60, and it muffed its cycle plans by having too many new core models come out at the same time. Some of the vehicles are long in the tooth. This campaign is filled with tech, messages about sustainability, race-track footage. We aren't saying Toyota is trying to out the brand on roller skates, but it is clearly using story-telling techniques to give fresh life to its innovations. That's a good idea, and they should keep at it.
"This isn't just a campaign, it's a statement that, for Lexus, the best is yet to come," says Dave Nordstrom, vice president of marketing for Lexus. "It's not about simply making incremental strides and improvements, but about taking giant leaps in innovation." These ads and this approach is slated to run through January, so it is a major push to super-charge the way customers think of Lexus.

Official: Lexus releases 2011 LS 460 Touring Edition

Lexus has aimed its 2011 LS 460 Touring Edition at a less frumpy crowd, giving the ride new 19-inch wheels and a sportier body kit. The Touring Edition goes on sale later this month with a sticker price of $73,000 before destination charges.
To keep things looking fresh, Lexus is adding a special mica paint job to the limited-production sedan. The Touring Edition package also features sport seats, matte-finish wood paneling and black leather upholstery with saddle leather accents.
Lexus says this thing will be built in limited numbers, but doesn't say how limited. Want one? Get in line now. Armed with $30k worth of camera gear, the two set about creating Stuck, a playful documentary of their time alone with DFW. The two-minute clip has only been out for a few days, but it's already viral and has made YouTube heroes out of the two guerilla documentarians. Audi is said to be launching a Spyder version for the R8 GT at the Frankfurt Motor Show this Fall. As with the coupe version, the Spyder will be limited to 333 units and should be priced at about $20,000 higher than the coupe, which is sold for about $196,800 in the U.S. The similarities will even extend to the number of units available in the U.S. We last heard that we were getting 90 units of the GT Coupe and we expect the same number for the Spyder version.Under the hood, Audi will place the same 5.2 liter V10 engine that delivers a total of 560 HP and 398 lbs-ft of torque. The Spyder version will sprint from 0 to 60 mph in 3.8 seconds and will be capable of a top speed of 196.97 mph. Thanks to body parts made in carbon fiber the R8 GT Spyder is 187 lbs lighter and in the same time delivers performance numbers that makes it the top-of-the-line version of the high-performance sports car.UPDATE 06/13/11: Audi has unveiled new images of the R8 GT Spyder from the car’s official debut at the 24 hours of Le Mans. If you read the reports of Aston Martin shifting production of its Rapide from its Magna Steyr contract facility in Austria to its own plant in England, and wondered how the company could absorb another assembly line, we could have our answer right here.
According to reports, Aston is preparing to significantly cut production of the Rapide in response to lagging sales. The four-door Aston was planned in 2007 for 2000 units per year, but shortly after that, the global luxury market collapsed, and sales prospects for the four-door coupe began to dwindle.
As a result, production of the Rapide could be reduced to just 1,250 units per year, or even further. And if one model's sales are dwindling, we might assume that some of the others - such as the Vantage or DB9/DBS lines - could be cutting back production as well, leaving excess capacity at the company's headquarters in Gaydon, Warwickshire.
